Why do groups as diverse as the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies (a conservative/libertarian legal group), the Heritage Foundation (a conservative public policy think tank), to the Constitution Society (a “Living Constitution” progressive legal group), the American Bar Association, and the American Civil Liberties Union, to name but a few, all regard John Marshall as a hero? Jefferson inherited almost all of his slaves (with debts attached) but Marshall spent years wheeling, dealing, trading and buying until he had in excess of 250 slaves. No one dares to seeks to remove monuments honoring him. John Marshall is worshiped by the American legal system, despite the fact that he owned more slaves than Thomas Jefferson, in addition to actively being a slave trader. Marshall is regarded by the mainstream legal community and history as simply the greatest legal mind of all time. Marshall is revered as the historical equivalent of Sir William Blackstone, Sir Edward Coke, Justinian I or Hammurabi. John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, is regarded by the legal community as an American legal demagogue and a legal colossus.
